Panipat is a serious process town — refinery, petrochemicals, thermal power, and one of India's biggest textile and dyeing clusters. It is also the kind of place where an instrument failure is not an inconvenience; it is a safety event.
Panipat is not like the general engineering towns around it. It has a refinery and a petrochemical complex, a thermal power station, and a textile and dyeing cluster large enough to have its own effluent treatment infrastructure. Each of those is a continuous process, and each has zones where an ordinary instrument is not merely inadequate but genuinely unsafe.
What that means in practice is that a lot of what we supply into Panipat is not a gauge. It is a pressure or differential pressure transmitter with a 4–20 mA / HART output — our VIPL-PT-200 and VIPL-DPT-200 series — a flameproof enclosure, an isolating diaphragm in the right material, and often a remote seal because the media cannot be allowed anywhere near the transmitter body. Getting any one of those elements wrong in a hazardous area is a serious matter, and we treat it as such.
The textile and dyeing side has a different but equally unforgiving character: hot, wet, chemically aggressive and running around the clock. A dye-bath temperature that is out by a few degrees ruins a batch of colour, and a steam gauge without a siphon dies within weeks. Most instrument failures are not manufacturing defects — they are specification mistakes. These are the ones we see most often in Panipat.
In a refinery or petrochemical zone, the area classification is not advisory. An instrument in a Zone 1 area must be certified for it — flameproof / Ex d, or the equivalent your plant standard demands. This is the one place where we will decline to supply a cheaper alternative, because the cheaper alternative could kill someone.
Where the media is corrosive, viscous, crystallising or simply too hot for a transmitter body, a remote seal with a capillary is not an accessory — it is the design. The seal diaphragm takes the process; the fill fluid carries the pressure to the sensor. Choose the fill fluid for the temperature range and the diaphragm for the chemistry.
This is the most common avoidable failure in Panipat's textile belt. Live steam entering a gauge socket cooks the movement and boils the fill out of a filled gauge. A pigtail or coil siphon fills with condensate and protects the instrument. It costs a fraction of the gauge.
A few degrees out on a dye bath and the shade is wrong across the whole batch. That is not a maintenance problem; it is a rejected order. The sensor, the well and the controller together decide the colour, and all three need to be right and calibrated.
ETP liquors will corrode brass, and over time will attack ordinary stainless. Diaphragm seals with the correct wetted material — SS316L, Hastelloy, tantalum — and the correct fill fluid are the difference between an instrument that lasts and one that is replaced every season.
A dyeing unit in the Panipat cluster was getting shade variation between batches on the same recipe. The dye-bath controller showed the correct temperature, the recipe had not changed, and the operators were experienced. Shade variation was being written off as a fact of life in dyeing.
We calibrated the temperature loop and found the sensor reading correct — but only just. The real problem was mechanical: the RTD was sitting in a thermowell with a loose fit, so there was an air gap between the sensor tip and the well wall. The reading lagged the bath by two to three minutes and under-read during heat-up, so the controller over-shot and then hunted.
We fitted a spring-loaded insert with the correct bore, which holds the sensor tip firmly against the bottom of the well. The lag disappeared, the controller stopped hunting, and shade variation on repeat batches effectively stopped.
Most of this website is about what we will supply. This paragraph is about what we will not. In a classified hazardous area — a refinery zone, a solvent handling area, a place where a flammable atmosphere can exist — we will not supply an instrument that is not certified for that area, no matter how the enquiry is framed and no matter what the budget is. If a customer tells us the area is Zone 1 and then asks for a cheaper uncertified transmitter, we will decline and explain why.
That is not commercial caution. It is that the failure mode of a wrong instrument in a hazardous area is not a wrong reading. It is an ignition source. Panipat, of all the places we supply, is the one where this matters most, and any supplier who will quietly quote you a non-certified instrument for a certified area is telling you something important about how they will behave when something goes wrong.
