Most instrument failures are not manufacturing defects — they are specification mistakes. These are the ones we see most often in Faridabad.
Presses and power packs hammer a gauge with pressure spikes on every stroke. The pointer flutters, the movement wears, and the gauge dies in months. A glycerine-filled gauge with a snubber costs a little more and lasts years. We fit both as standard for press duty.
Live steam entering the gauge socket cooks the movement. A pigtail siphon filled with condensate protects it. If your boiler gauges keep failing, this is almost always why — and it is a fifty-rupee fix on a gauge you keep re-buying.
In forging shops the protection tube takes the abuse — thermal shock, scale, mechanical knocks. Match the sheath and well material to the furnace atmosphere and temperature, and the thermocouple stops being a monthly purchase.
A 0–40 bar gauge reading a 6 bar line spends its life in the least accurate part of its scale. Pick a range so the working pressure sits between half and two-thirds of full scale. The gauge reads better and lasts longer.

An auto component unit on the Mathura Road corridor was replacing the pressure gauges on its hydraulic presses almost monthly. The purchase team had responded the way most do — by buying cheaper gauges each time, on the logic that a consumable should at least be a cheap consumable.
We visited the shop and watched a single press cycle. The gauge pointer slammed across the dial on every stroke: pressure spikes several times the working pressure, hundreds of times a shift. No dry gauge survives that, at any price. The gauges were not failing because they were cheap; they were failing because the duty had never been specified.
We replaced the gauges on two presses with glycerine-filled SS gauges fitted with snubbers, ranged so the working pressure sat at two-thirds of scale. Six months later both original gauges were still in service and the unit converted the rest of the shop. Their gauge spend fell to a fraction of what it had been — by buying a slightly more expensive gauge, once.
Any supplier can print "quick delivery" on a visiting card.
