Buyers often compare instrument quotations on price alone, line for line, and pick the lowest. On a genuinely identical specification that is fine — but instrument quotes are frequently not comparing the same thing, and the cheapest line is cheapest precisely because it is a lesser instrument for the duty. Comparing fairly means looking past the number to what is actually being supplied, and a good quotation makes that easy by stating it.
Check the wetted material first: a gauge quoted in a cheaper internal material will lose to one in SS316 on any aggressive or even mildly demanding media, and the price gap is exactly that difference. Check the range against your working point — an instrument ranged so your pressure sits in the accurate band is worth more than a wider, vaguer one. Check whether accessories the duty needs are included: a steam gauge without a siphon, or a press gauge without a snubber, is cheaper on paper and a repeat purchase in practice. Check the accuracy class and, for transmitters, the output and turndown. And check whether calibration and the certificate you will need for an audit are part of the price or an extra later.

If a competing quote is cheaper, it is worth asking which of these it left out — often the difference is not a better deal but a different, lesser instrument.
