The equipment everybody buys last and uses most. Chosen properly it lasts years; chosen on capacity alone it fails in months.
Almost every pallet truck enquiry starts with capacity, and it is the least useful number in the decision. A 2500 kg truck and a 3000 kg truck cost very little apart, and both will lift what most plants put on them.
What decides whether the truck lasts five years or five months is the floor. A truck rated at 2500 kg on a smooth, dry warehouse floor is not effectively rated for that on a foundry floor with sand and scale, a cold chain dock with standing water, or a mill bay with an uneven surface and rolled-in debris.
Wheel material and bearing choice do the work here. Nylon runs beautifully on a smooth dry floor and chews itself apart on a rough one. Polyurethane copes with wet and uneven surfaces. Steel handles scale where nothing else will. The truck body is much the same in each case; the difference is underneath.
So the question we ask is what your floor looks like, and then what you are lifting.
Wheels wrong for the surface. The commonest failure by a wide margin. Nylon wheels on a scale-covered mill floor flat-spot and crack within months, and the truck is written off as poor quality when the wheels were simply the wrong choice.
Bearings taking water. On a cold chain dock or a washdown area, sealed bearings are the difference between a truck that rolls and one that seizes. Standard bearings in standing water do not last a season.
Loading beyond the pump capacity, repeatedly. Not the occasional overload — the daily one. A truck at 2500 kg used at 2800 kg every day wears the pump seals and starts to bleed down under load, which is dangerous rather than merely inconvenient.
No maintenance at all. A pallet truck needs its pump topped up and its wheels checked. Most receive neither until they fail, and both take minutes.
Drums handled with the wrong equipment. Lifting or tipping a full drum with a truck not designed for it is where the genuinely serious injuries in a despatch bay come from.

Trucks failing repeatedly? Look at the wheels before blaming the truck. Flat-spotted, cracked or chewed wheels on an otherwise sound truck mean the material was wrong for the surface, and in many cases we can simply supply the correct wheels rather than a new truck.
Handling drums by hand? Please stop. Drum carriers and lifters cost very little against the injury they prevent, and a full 200-litre drum is beyond what should be moved manually under any circumstances.
