Strapping and sealing hold a package together. Wrapping does something different — it holds a stack of separate packages together as one unit, and keeps dust, rain and handling damage off it in transit.
That means the specification follows the load rather than the throughput. Twenty pallets an hour of heavy, dense, stable cartons and twenty pallets an hour of light, tall, unstable ones are the same number and completely different machines.
The question we ask first is whether the load stays upright by itself when the turntable spins. If it does, a standard turntable machine is enough. If it does not — light cartons, tall stacks, mixed heights, anything that leans — the top press is not an accessory, it is the reason the machine will work at all.
Light loads toppling on the turntable. The classic failure. The load starts to lean as it spins, the film pulls it further, and the operator stops using the machine. A powered top press holds the stack down while the turntable does its work, and it turns an unusable machine into a working one.
Film applied without pre-stretch. Film costs money per pallet, and a machine with proper pre-stretch uses considerably less of it for the same holding force. Over a year on real volume, that difference is larger than most buyers expect.
Wrong film for the load. Micron thickness follows load weight and sharpness. Too thin and it punctures on a corner; too thick and you are paying for material the load does not need.
Not enough wraps at the base. A pallet that separates from its base in transit does so because the bottom wraps were insufficient. It is a setting, and it is the setting most often left at the factory default.
A machine sized on floor space. Turntable diameter has to suit your largest pallet, not your average one, or your biggest loads are the ones that will not wrap.
