Scale is what separates Sahibabad from every other steel belt

Wazirpur in Delhi is a metal belt of small sheds. Sahibabad is the opposite — Site I to IV carry re-rolling mills, continuous annealing lines and fabrication shops working at a scale that changes the arithmetic completely. A single mill here can consume more fuel in a shift than an entire Delhi estate.

When a plant is that size, a measurement error stops being a quality nuisance and becomes a running cost. A reheating furnace 40 degrees above its setpoint on a continuous line burns money every hour without producing a single visible defect. Nobody complains, nothing is rejected, and the fuel bill absorbs it silently.

That is the argument we make here, and it is an economic one rather than a technical one. The question is not whether your instruments are accurate enough to make good steel. It is whether they are accurate enough that you are not paying for heat you did not need.

The four numbers a Sahibabad mill should actually know

What the furnace is really at. Not the setpoint, the actual. On a continuous reheating or annealing line, a drifted thermocouple is invisible in the product and expensive in gas. Measuring the gap between setpoint and reality is usually the highest-return hour we spend in this belt.

How long a thermocouple lasts here, and why. In continuous service the sheath fails long before the element. Shops that change thermocouples monthly are almost always using a sheath chosen for temperature alone rather than for the furnace atmosphere.

What the boiler is doing between readings. Mills at this scale run substantial boilers, and drum level and steam pressure instruments are the ones whose failure stops the whole plant rather than one machine.

Whether the hydraulics are being read at all. Mill stands, shears and coilers run large hydraulic circuits with shock loading. A dead gauge on a mill stand is a safety issue, and on a plant this size it is also the cheapest instrument in the building.

What Sahibabad plants ask us for most
Furnaces & annealing

Thermocouples with sheaths chosen for the atmosphere rather than only the temperature, multi-channel scanners on one time base, ramp-soak programmers and audit recorders.

Rolling mills & utilities

Steam gauges with siphons and isolation valves, glycerine-filled gauges for mill stands and shears, temperature transmitters and panel annunciators.

Pickling & plating

Diaphragm seal gauges suited to acid service, tank level switches that do not stick, and case materials chosen for vapour rather than a clean plant room.

Wire drawing & processing

Die and bath temperature control, cooling circuit gauges, and simple recording where a customer asks for evidence of process control.

Instrumentation we supply into Sahibabad

For continuous furnaces and annealing lines: thermocouples with sheath and protection tube matched to the atmosphere and expected life, multi-channel scanners so a lagging zone is visible against the others, ramp-soak programmers, and recorders where a customer requires a trace.

For mill utilities: boiler drum level switches and steam gauges with siphons and isolation valves, feedwater instrumentation, temperature transmitters, and panel annunciation the shift crew already reads.

For mill stands, shears and coilers: glycerine-filled hydraulic gauges sized for the working pressure rather than the relief setting, snubbers for shock loading, pressure switches and transmitters.

For pickling and finishing: diaphragm seal gauges with wetted materials suited to the acid in use, tank level switches, and case materials and ingress protection specified for vapour rather than a plant room.

Packing and sealing for mill output

A re-rolling mill despatches bundles, coils and cut lengths continuously, and the packing bay has to keep pace with the mill rather than the other way round. That makes throughput the specification, not floor space.

Fully automatic strapping earns its cost here in a way it does not in a small shed, because the output is genuinely continuous and the bundle pattern is repetitive. Strap tension is set at commissioning for the product — thin sheet and light-gauge tube mark at the strap line, and heavy bundles need more than the machine default.

Box wrapping with a top press for palletised finished goods, and hydraulic pallet trucks rated for real mill weights rather than warehouse duty. Sealing elements and wear parts are held against your order reference, because on a continuous mill a stopped strapping head backs up the whole line within an hour.

Heavy-duty strapping

Sized on bundles per shift, not floor space, with the tension range steel bundles and coils actually need.

Tension set at commissioning

Too tight deforms thin sheet at the strap line, too loose and the bundle opens on the truck. We set it for your product, not a generic carton.

Wrapping & handling

Box wrapping with top press for palletised loads, and hydraulic pallet trucks rated for real mill weights rather than warehouse duty.

Spares against your order

Sealing elements and wear parts held against your original order reference, because a stopped strapping head stops despatch.

Setting up a new line, or improving an existing one

Commissioning a new furnace or mill line? Send the furnace drawing or process description. We specify thermocouple type, sheath and protection tube for the temperature and atmosphere, size the scanner or controller, and supply it with traceable calibration certificates.

Running an established mill? Ask us to measure before you buy anything. We check every furnace zone on site, tell you the gap between setpoint and actual, and convert it into rupees of gas per shift. That number decides what is worth doing far better than any sales argument.

And if nothing needs replacing, we will say so. A calibration visit that ends with "your instruments are fine, the problem is elsewhere" is a good outcome, and it is how we would rather earn the next order.

Going deeper on the packing side

The packing and sealing machinery mentioned above has its own pages, written around the machine rather than the area. If that is the part you are working on, start there.

Questions buyers here ask

How much is a drifted furnace reading actually costing us?

That is the calculation we would rather run than argue about. We measure the gap between setpoint and actual on every zone, and convert it into gas consumed per shift at your fuel rate. On a continuous line the number is usually larger than people expect and it decides the whole conversation.

Our thermocouples last a month. Is that normal for continuous service?

No. In continuous furnace service the sheath fails long before the element, and a one-month life almost always means the sheath was chosen for temperature alone rather than for the furnace atmosphere. Getting that right commonly takes it to a year.

Which instrument failure stops the whole mill rather than one machine?

Boiler drum level and steam pressure, every time. At this scale the boiler feeds everything, so those are the instruments worth holding spares for and worth replacing during a planned stop rather than after a failure.

Do you supply multi-channel scanners for furnace zones?

Yes — eight and sixteen channel scanners putting every zone on one display and one time base, which is what you need to see whether one zone is lagging the others through a cycle.

What strapping tension do steel bundles need?

It depends on the product. Thin sheet and light-gauge tube deform at the strap line if the tension is too high; too low and the bundle opens on the truck. We set it at commissioning for your actual product rather than leaving it to the operator.

Do you supply steam gauges with siphons?

Yes, and we would recommend them as standard on any boiler line. A gauge mounted directly on live steam drifts and then fails, and the siphon costs a fraction of the gauge.

How far is Sahibabad from your works?
