One decision decides which machine you need: whether your carton size stays the same or changes through the day. Everything else follows from that.
A carton sealer does one job — it tapes the top and bottom flaps as the carton passes through. Both types run at roughly the same speed, around fifteen cartons a minute, so throughput is almost never the deciding factor.
The difference is resetting. A semi-automatic machine is set to one carton size and must be adjusted by hand when the size changes. A random machine senses each carton and adjusts itself as it arrives.
So the question is simply: how many times a day does your carton size change? If the answer is never or twice, a semi-automatic machine is correct and a random one is money spent on a problem you do not have. If the answer is constantly — job-work packing, export orders, third-party operations — the random machine pays for itself in the operator time it stops consuming, usually inside a year.
Tape wandering off the seam. Almost always the side belts or guides being set for a different carton, or a carton that is not square. A machine set properly seals cleanly for months; a machine set roughly wanders from the first hour and the operator learns to live with it.
Poor-quality BOPP tape. Tape thickness, adhesive and core size all affect how the head runs. Cheap tape that splits or fails to lift costs more in stoppages than it saves per roll, and the machine gets the blame.
Cartons that are not square. A sealer can only seal what arrives. Under-filled or poorly formed cartons bow, and the flaps do not close cleanly. This is a packing problem the machine is being asked to solve.
The blade treated as permanent. The cutting blade is a wear part. A dull blade tears rather than cuts, and the seal looks untidy long before anyone thinks to change it.
A random machine bought for a fixed-size line. The opposite mistake, and we see it. If you run one carton size, a random machine is doing nothing a semi-automatic would not do for considerably less.
Set to one carton size and adjusted by hand. Right for most manufacturing units and any operation where the pack was designed once and stayed.
